On commander decks
So, upon hearing that there may be some games of commander coming up I decided to sit down and build myself a commander deck. So off to the internets I went to look for the rules....
And the first one pretty much shot me in the foot. If I'm reading it correctly, you can only play colours that are used for your commander's mana cost. I don't own any multiple colour legendary creatures. Is it possible to play a Mono-colour EDH deck, or should I just wait till I can buy a commander?

You can definately play monocolour EDH, if not i'm sure we could find you a fitting multicoloured general.
Thse ones seem good, my favourite being this one;
http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=147393
Other good G/W ones;
http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=247374
http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=140188

The first one seems like he could make for a mental G/W token based commander deck. Or simple elf funtimes.
Re: On commander decks
EDH/commander is a nice format to get into cause all you need is a single copy of any one card you would like to put in. A quick search on the gatherer shows 482 legendary creatures.
Some of those creatures are going to be mono coloured. Omnath, Gerard[code], cho-manno and eight-and-a-half-tails are all examples of mono coloured generals.
Using mono coloured generals can be a very good exercise in deck construction if you wanted to use a specific colour. Green for example is very diverse and has some exceptionally strong cards that can be used individually. White has the best of mass removal, essential for multiplayer games of edh.
The commander decks are very good value for money and provide some very good cards that are considered to be essential, such as sol ring, lightning greaves and solemn similacrum.
I have a 7 EDH decks built atm. Tom has a few more. If you feel like you want some feedback for your lists im sure either of us would be more than happy to help you with them.
I have lots of cards that fit nicely into edh decks including some of the tri coloured shards lands, dual lorwyn lands, filter lands, vivid lands and some of the mono coloured utility lands. A good mana base is essential in edh. If you have lots of wants and want to save money by trading for them, then just ask, i wont mind checking for them
